Gloria Ogo :: Tlotlo Tsamaase

Tlotlo TsamaaseTlotlo Tsamaase
My work exists in the space where emotional pressure reshapes reality, where memory bends architecture, silence accumulates weight, and the unreal becomes a language for what cannot be spoken directly. I am drawn to speculative techniques that privilege restraint and intimacy, allowing distortion to emerge from interior experience rather than spectacle.

This approach has been shaped in part by the work of Tlotlo Tsamaase, a speculative fiction writer from Botswana, whose stories move fluidly between the psychological and the surreal. Her fiction demonstrates how strangeness can unfold quietly from grief and longing, without announcing itself as metaphor. What I take from Tsamaase is a commitment to precision and withholding, an understanding that altered realities can mirror internal fracture. In my own work, speculative elements function in this same way: not as departures from realism, but as extensions of emotional truth, rendering inner lives visible without forcing resolution.

Tlotlo Tsamaase is a Motswana author of Womb City and The Silence of the Wilting Skin. Her second novel, House of Margins, is forthcoming in Spring 2026, as well as her debut YA fantasy, The Bloodwinds, from Knopf in 2027. She is a Caine Prize finalist. Tlotlo has received support from the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, and her story “Behind Our Irises” is the joint winner of the Nommo Award for Best Short Story (2021). Tlotlo's short fiction has appeared in Africa Risen, The Best of World SF Volume 1, Clarkesworld, Terraform, Africanfuturism Anthology, Chiral Mad 5, and other publications. She is a Rhysling Award nominee and a Bessie Head Short Story Award winner. She obtained a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Botswana and has an MFA in Creative Writing from Chapman University. She is a PhD student in English (Creative Writing) at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln.
