You're probably familiar with Poetry Out Loud, the national recitation competition for teens. You also may know that this year the federal government removed from the anthology—from which students are to choose the poems they recite—any poems the organizers considered controversial or salacious. The poems that were removed were written by poets from historically oppressed communities. In addition, only copyright-free poems were included in this year's anthology. In response, West Trestle invites you to gather for an online open mic where poets will read or recite from the banned Poetry Out Loud anthology one poem written by a contemporary poet. If time permits, poets may also share one of their own poems. Spaces are limited! Register here. |
