They Say Jesus Walked on Water

They say Jesus walked on water. You got up before the sun rose. You’d kiss abuela goodbye. Even on the cold misty mornings you waited in line for the bus. You’d cross town carrying a smile and your rafaelitos, always making sure to greet the driver by name. The chain lock needed some convincing to open up, but you loved doing it. You once told me that as you unraveled the metal links, you thought about how in a few short hours, the school would welcome hundreds of children. Often the last to leave, the one who closed up, only to be back the next morning. They say Jesus walked on water. You got up before the sun rose.
